STFC Online Work Experience

Each year at STFC, we are proud to run a highly successful work experience scheme for Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students (S4-S6 in Scotland and Years 11-14 in Northern Ireland) at schools based in the UK. For the summer 2026 programme, the work experience team will be delivering online work experience provision for young people.

STFC online work experience is open to young people who live greater than one hour’s drive from a STFC National Lab site that is currently delivering in person work experience, or to young people who have access needs or barriers that make it a challenge to attend work experience in person, including transportation.

Placement details

Online work experience placements will last one week from 22 June to 26 June 2026. Please ensure that you are available for the full week of online work experience before applying for the placement. Please note: We are unable to offer online placements outside this timeframe.

Students will work in a small group with two or three supervisors on a project relevant to their interests and STFC, which will meet the relevant Gatsby benchmarks. The placements will be a mixture of independent working and supervisor led sessions with the opportunity to participate in online talks, tours and skill development workshops.

How to apply

Applications for online placements will open on 1st January 2026 and close on 28th February 2026. We cannot accept any late applications. All applicants will hear from us by 29 April 2026, letting them know if they have been offered a placement.

For 2026, students will apply for individual projects. The projects available for this year (2026) can be found linked below.
